When to Keep Your Child Home From School
We know it’s not always easy to decide when your child should stay home. Keeping sick kids at home helps protect other students and staff so everyone stays healthy. Here are some simple guidelines:
Fever
- Keep your child home if their temperature is 100°F or higher.
- They may return after 24 hours fever-free (without medicine).
Cold & Cough
- Stay home if your child has a bad cough, green nasal drainage, or is very tired.
Vomiting or Diarrhea
- Keep home until symptoms have been gone for at least 24 hours.
- If stomach pain continues, keep them home until they feel better.
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
- Symptoms: red, itchy, swollen eyes with discharge.
- Bacterial pink eye: may return 24 hours after first treatment.
- Viral pink eye: may return when eyes are no longer red or draining.
Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease
- Causes mouth sores and rash/blisters on hands, feet, or buttocks.
- Highly contagious the first week.
- Your child may return with a doctor’s note or once symptoms are gone.
Scabies
- Causes intense nighttime itching and rash, often on wrists, elbows, or between fingers.
- May return 24 hours after treatment (depending on severity).
Impetigo
- A skin infection usually around the mouth and nose.
- Keep sores covered.
- If sores can’t be covered, return only after they have scabbed over.
Head Lice
- Spread by head-to-head contact, not poor hygiene.
- If lice/nits are found, families will be contacted.
- For treatment options, contact your school nurse or healthcare provider.
