Mr. Neil Harbel
My name is Neil Harbel and I am excited to be the Band Director here at Middleton High School. I have a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music from Virginia State University and a Master of Science in Special Education from Western Governors University. Music is my first love and I settled on percussion as my instrument family in middle school. I have not met a surface I don't like to drum on! After high school, I went on to become a performing member of Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps, Tarheel Sun Drum & Bugle Corps, and Virginia Helmsmen Indoor Percussion Ensemble. I have studied percussion under Bill Bussone, David Chambliss, and the late Donald Bick. I honestly feel as though many of my teachers were the best in the business and inspired me to be the best teacher I can be.
I have been teaching music in some capacity since 1998. I have over 10 years of experience as a percussion specialist in high school and college programs in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Montana. I have been a Music Director for many students in several different programs in Montana and Virginia. I have also taught special education and learned a great deal about how to better meet the needs of all students. I believe all students are capable of excelling and I want to provide the necessary tools to ensure they are successful.
My extended family resides here in the Treasure Valley. I am genuinely excited to finally teach here and set down roots with my family. I was married to my wife, Kathryn, in 2006. If you are around the music students for any period of time, you will see her around. Kathryn is my go to person for all of the odds and ends of the band program and she helps me tremendously! Four years ago, we adopted a little bundle of energy named Declan and our family was complete! He is a kind, caring, wild and crazy kid who is destined to be another drummer! Outside of school, you will find us spending as much time as possible together, outside, and relaxing listening to music.
